Airedale: reviews. "Airedale is my diagnosis!"
What kind of beast is the Airedale? What are they like?
Airedale are the largest of the terriers, and that’s it all: this is a terrier, an active dog, very charismatic, confident, quite autonomous, but, due to its large size, calmer and more balanced than its more compact relatives.
It must be remembered why this dog was created. Airedale were taken for hunting otters, which were considered pests. That is, the dog’s task was to independently find the victim, strangle and throw there, on the spot. He was not supposed to bring prey and, in principle, work in company with a person.
Airedale, like most breeds of the Terrier group, is quite stubborn. The motto “I see the goal, I see no obstacles” can be boldly declared by the airedale as her. If he wants to - he will punch his head through the wall and insist that he needs it. Therefore, when working with Airedale, patience, patience, patience ... and much more patience are necessary. It is difficult to negotiate with Erdel by force. But I do not do aversive (unpleasant, based on punishments - approx. editorial staff) methods of work, I seek compromises and learn to love working and interacting with a person. In my opinion, this works great and gives wonderful results.
In work and life with a representative of this breed you can’t do without a sense of humor: in my opinion, airedales are clowns with a phenomenal sense of humor. But not for everybody. 🙂
Airedale are good because most of them are sanguine. That is, by their nature, they are excited quite quickly, but at the same time they are quite quickly inhibited. This is a very comfortable dog in everyday life (with the right upbringing): he can “undermine” at any time to go in for training, run or play, but at the same time, if he needs to not interfere, he lies down and sleeps soundly. Naturally, subject to a normal exercise, sufficient physical and mental stress.
However, the airedale is a dog that does not like the owner’s mistakes. They are bored of repeating the same thing many times. This is not a Labrador and not an Australian shepherd who is ready to repeat 30 to 40 times until the owner can correctly explain what he wants. Erdel will try three times, and if the owner does not succeed, he will leave to go about his own business, finally advising him to learn the materiel. In my opinion, this tones up. And I also really love challenges. 🙂
The Airedale is a dog that loves to play, confident, often reckless and not averse to fighting. But if we start training on time and explain how to behave with other dogs, teach the dog self-control, we will get a wonderful comfortable pet that will easily get along with representatives of other species and will be willing to play with fellow tribesmen.
My dog will soon be 5 years old, he is very comfortable for socializing puppies and timid dogs, actively shows reconciliation signals in communication with other adult males, but for the time being. He himself does not start fights, does not look for conflicts, but if another dog rushes at him, he will readily and even with some pleasure respond. And it should be said that the jaws of airedale are quite a serious weapon.
Erdel Erdellu strife, but it so happened that both airedale, who lived with me - hunters. And the current one, Elbrus, has a highly developed hunting instinct from puppyhood. On the one hand, this is a plus, because he is very easily involved in the game and is happy to train with the help of the game, but on the other hand, it was difficult to cope when, for example, he raised a hare. He himself learned to "read" the tracks and found hares even in Bangalore Square. Soon we will know all the rabbits of Minsk in person. Now the "booty" can be carried a meter away from him, Elbrus screams like a beagle while driving, but he turns around and runs to me at the very first command, although he is shaking from overexcitation. However, the developed hunting instinct must be taken into account and from early childhood work on the process of inhibition, on the ideal call, to teach the puppy to hear the owner, even when there are a lot of irritants around. Otherwise, as a result, we can get a terrier that enthusiastically chases cyclists, skateboarders, running children or small dogs, because they are all prey.
In my opinion, life with Erdel is very comfortable and interesting. Although, in fairness, it is worth noting that in order to achieve a serious sporting result, you must work with Erdel longer and more than with traditional breeds for canine sports. And, of course, a lot depends on the method chosen for working with the dog. “Each cricket praises its sixth.” I work by the method of positive reinforcement, and I really, really like the result that I got from a rather complicated puppy, which was my Elbrus puppy. Now I have an extremely obedient, mischievous, funny, proactive, confident dog.
How good are airedales as guards and bodyguards?
In my opinion, now the breed has changed. Experienced Airedale sigh and often compare the Soviet Airedale and the present. Previously, airedals were attendants. They were larger, more confident, calmer. Now, for the most part, the airedale is more infantile, less aggressive towards humans, although there are still serious dogs.
With the right choice of puppy and training, airedale show themselves well in protective and guard duty, in IPO.
My first airedale passed the ZKS for I degree and even “worked” twice in real life, and the current dog is not trained for defense at all, and, I think, in some difficult situation he will run away first, and I will protect him. 🙂 But this is our personal specificity. A good, stable airedale is a good defender.
How do Airedale terriers treat children?
It is usually good if we are not talking about any deviations (for example, fearful dogs).
Airedale is a great friend for children, for games. The only thing is that from the very puppy's age he must be trained to play carefully, because by virtue of his gambling the dog may not notice that where the ball ends, the hand begins, and in this case it is capable of grabbing - not out of anger, but through carelessness.
But if the dog works correctly, she quickly learns to control herself.
How to care for an airedale?
The undoubted plus of the Airedale is that, with proper care, it does not fade and has no smell. Although, of course, if it gets wet, it will smell like a dog.
In general, I believe that all breeds smell differently. For example, setters smell like caramel. And airedale - cinnamon and nutmeg. And I really like the smell of my dog; I really miss it on trips.
The most difficult moment in the content of an airedale, in my opinion, is trimming (plucking of wool). Airedale must be trimmed regularly to help get rid of dead hair. And if we want to see a terrier, not a cloud, then trimming it should be about once every 4 weeks. Maximum - once every 6 to 8 weeks.
Trimming is not painful (Elbrus sleeps during the procedure), but laborious. You can turn to the groomer, you can learn and do it yourself. I pluck the dog myself. It seems to me that it is more comfortable for both the owner and the pet.
Beard and mustache is “our everything”, they should be looked after, cared for and cherished :-). If the dog eats natural food, then after eating I recommend wiping the face with a damp cloth and combing so that the porridge does not remain porridge “for a rainy day”. You can teach the dog, after she drinks, to wipe his beard on a towel lying nearby.
The Airedale used to have their tails docked, but now they flaunt with a long marker of their mood.
At the time of the change of teeth, the ears of the puppy should be glued to form the correct room and shape. To do this, it is better to contact a specialist.
Just in case, once every 6 months I donate the dog’s blood for biochemistry to make sure everything is in order. Well, of course, every three months I give an anthelmintic, once a year I vaccinate, in the tick season I regularly treat the dog for fleas and ticks. But these are the usual manipulations of any responsible dog owner.
Are airedales susceptible to genetic diseases?
In general, airedale still remains one of the healthiest breeds. As a rule, they live happily ever after.
But still I advise you to take puppies from parents who have certificates for dysplasia, although this, unfortunately, is not a guarantee of no problems. However, this applies to almost all breeds.
Feel free to ask questions not only to breeders, but also to owners of puppies from the same kennel, find out how many years relatives lived (life expectancy is still an indicator of health). If dogs compete, see how they work, to what age. If a dog suddenly leaves the ring at 3 - 4 years old, this may be evidence of some health problems (although, of course, leaving the sports career may be associated with a change in the owner's life priorities).
Why exactly airedale?
I decided for myself that I will always have airedale. Because airedale is my diagnosis, I adore these dogs.
In my opinion, they are incredibly beautiful, charismatic and smart. And this piercing look of them! I love it when Elbrus peeks straight into my brain while working.
For me, airedale are very comfortable. Do you want to play or work out - they want here to lie down quietly - they lie.
I like that there is no wool. I like the smell of nutmeg and cinnamon.
I really like to train airedale. I love challenges and finding solutions, I like to solve puzzles that the terrier regularly makes up.
I really like that you need to negotiate with them, that if you want, you don’t want, but you need to be a diplomat, find the key to Airedale. And when you found it, this little key, terrier grows into you, becomes your continuation.
It seems to me when the airedale works - it is so beautiful! They are springy, energetic and a little funny ...
Our first airedale was perfect in everything; it entered our life as a missing piece of a puzzle. He stayed that way all his life - a harmonious and natural component of our family. And when he was gone, we could not take a dog for 9 years, because we were sure that there would be no other. Then I nevertheless made up my mind, but I wanted to change the breed, so as not to inadvertently compare with the previous Airedale. And I chose between the Weimaraner and the Hungarian Vyzhla. I came to the exhibition to look at representatives of these breeds, agreed with the breeder that in four months we would have survived, went to tell my husband about it - and at the exit, in the last ring, I saw airedale. And this is also about them - they always appear when necessary. They ran around the ring and looked at me with their almond-shaped eyes. And when you know them, you recognize these movements, this look from under bushy eyebrows, you understand their facial expressions ... they are so dear and understandable ... and that's it ... I disappeared again 🙂 Now I didn’t survive and not the Weimaraner, but the Airedale Elbrus.
They are springs, they are magnificent, and talking about them makes it difficult to be objective. When we find the breed for ourselves - the whole picture immediately develops.
Now I am telling all this - and I want to run faster to my Airedale, stroke him, kiss, play with him. Because they are beautiful. 🙂
And with all this - never and never take an airedale. 🙂 When starting an airedale, you need to understand what you are subscribing to.
Which owner does the Airedale Terrier need? And which one is not needed?
Definitely, the Airedale does not need an impulsive, quick-tempered, tough owner, because it is very difficult to negotiate with an Airedale from a position of strength. I do not accept hard methods, but they do not work with herdel. If you kick him, he goes into prostration and refuses to cooperate.Even the look becomes empty, glassy, and in the head - only a rumble.
The owner of the airedale is a person with charisma, quite active, who is bored of the same type of walk or standing in one place in the company of other dog lovers. Erdel loves new experiences and seeks them throughout his life. He needs to move, constantly study something, feel, try on the tooth, sniff out, and the owner should be to his advantage.
In this case, of course, we are not talking about marathon runners, because the airedale is not designed for long runs. My husband and I really like to ride bicycles for 80-100 km, and “religion does not allow us to ride without a dog,” so our airedale has a bicycle trailer. We go out of town with a bicycle trailer; in the country we release a dog. He rushes about, and when he gets tired, he requires a carriage, and we "serve" our curly "master".
The owner of the airedale must be very patient and have a sense of humor, because these dogs are incredible clowns.
The owner of the airedale must be ready at times to bang his head against the wall - with feeling, with delight and with pleasure, because otherwise it sometimes becomes sad. 🙂
The owner of the airedale must be demanding, but at the same time soft. But necessarily demanding. Because the airedale is one of those breeds that are convinced: if it “rolled” once, then it will turn out in the second. Did not work? Let's try in the third, fourth ... on the tenth did not "ride"? Well, okay ... Then they all worked out, once they didn’t finish something - oh, cool, the owner gave a slack! So start over.
The owner of an airedale must love challenges and perceive them with humor.
And most importantly - he must love his dog. But not to love them is impossible.
