Keeshond: reviews: “Keeshond is a comfortable family dog”
Why exactly Keeskhond?
I used to work with service dogs, but at some point I wanted to get a family dog.
Keeshond - very compact, trained, comfortable, family dogs.
Keeshond is an opportunist. You need to practice with any dog, including keeshond, but dogs of this breed do not necessarily need special training or sport. Everyday obedience is enough for Keeshond to live well with you, and if you engage in special training, it will work great. Our dogs practice agility and frisbee and can compete in competition with many other breeds. That is, if we do some kind of sport or a “working specialty” - we get the result, we don’t do it — we just live comfortably next to the dog. This is a fundamental difference from the more “serious” breeds.
For example, if you start a border collie, he constantly needs some work. And if you do not take this dog, she will find herself an occupation herself. And whether you like it is already your problem. Keeskhond are not like that.
I consider it extremely important when choosing a breed to find out why this breed was bred - this determines the nature of the dog. And if Husky, for example, was bred in order to escape, then Keeshond was bred to be next to a person. They were always companions and never “worked” as security guards or hunters.
Keeshond - a dog unusually focused on humans. And for her, contact with a person is extremely important. Therefore, if they call me and ask a dog "in the private sector, in the aviary," my first question is: how much will you see your dog at the same time? If communication is not enough, the dog grows nervous and stupid, will be torn to all passers-by and yell.
It is extremely important to communicate with Keeshond, especially before 1 year. I’m not talking about being near the dog 24 hours 7 days a week, but it’s important to give the dog time. However, this applies to any breed.
Breeder's observations: Keeshond puppies, like almost all puppies, love to nibble. And up to 1 year we went through this “wonderful” period. Moreover, my dogs began to gnaw at an older age than “accepted” - closer to 7 months, although, it would seem, the teeth have already changed. But after about 1.5 months it passed.
Keeskhondy are very cheerful and positive, they love to play and indulge. No wonder one of the unspoken names of the breeds is “Smiling Dutchman”.
Not being hunters, they do not chase birds (unless, of course, I need him to chase them), cats or other dogs. And if this happens, they are very easy to manage, respond to a call.
Breeder's Observations: Keeshond is wonderful with children. My oldest dog is 10 years old, and my daughter is 8. Naturally, when the baby crawled, the first thing he crawled to the dog and counted his teeth with his finger. Sonya, our dog, just turned away. Sonya suffered when she was dressed - in winter, with the batteries turned on, they pulled on a hat and wrapped it in a warm blanket. So Keeshond has angelic patience.
Keeshond Education and Training
Keeshond is a well-run dog. But in the event that you are engaged with it. If you don’t do it, he simply won’t understand what you want from him.
Breeder's recommendation: Many people ask how old Keskhond should be. You need to start training your dog the moment it crosses the threshold of your home without waiting for 6, 9 months or 1.5 years.
You should not wait until some problem arises (and they arise very easily if you “work” on it). Many complain: oh, my dog is begging. So you did everything for this! The puppy sits, claps its eyes, the owners are moved, how good it is, and stick a piece. And what is he - a fool, or something - not to use? He pats his eyes again. If they gave him a piece of it from here, he will start to get it here - he's smart! After all, no one explained that this should not be done.
And if you say "you can not" - he will not do it. Well, maybe not right away. It may be necessary to repeat this “impossible” many times.
Keeskhondas are very easy to learn, and there are cases when owners take already quite adult dogs (over 5-6 years old), train them and take first places in competitions. Naturally, it is easier to achieve results by starting to practice with a small puppy, but even with an older dog it is quite realistic to get excellent results.
With my average dog, we started to engage in clicker at about 2 years old, with the youngest dog - from about 5 months old. Yes, with the older dog, it takes a little more time, but in general - there is not much difference. The main thing is to set a goal.
Breeder's recommendation: It is better to train Keeshond on the positive. Keeshond will not work from under the stick. He will do, but this skill will not last long. But if this is done in a positive way, it will be clear and stable.
It is believed that companions are not trained. Nonsense. All trained. There is even a basset and sharpei who dance freestyle, and dance divine! But these breeds are considered not to be trained. What to speak about Keeskhond?
Keeshonda is easier to motivate for food, they are quite strong food workers. You can play, but it takes time, and it is important to play them correctly. We even originally played was based on food, and even now I continue to reinforce the game with food.
Keeskhond can be taught almost anything. In addition, probably, of guard and guard service - in this case it is worth choosing a breed that was specifically bred for these purposes. It is not assumed that a family dog will protect something or someone.
