Ferret keeping at home: specialist advice
To keep a ferret at home, it is important to remember that these are predators, successful rodent and bird hunters. And the ferrets need appropriate housing conditions.
What to consider when keeping a ferret at home
First of all, take praise about the simplicity of keeping ferrets at home with a fair amount of skepticism. A ferret is not a dog or a cat, he will never be a comfortable pet and will not give up the habits of a predator.
In addition, ferrets are extremely intelligent creatures. It is interesting to contain them, but this quality can also create difficulties.
Before you start a ferret, think about where he will live and whether he will be able to move freely.
Think about security. Ferrets like to climb into holes, so the various gaps between the wall and furniture and other nooks for them are extremely attractive. The animal can climb there, fail to get out and suffer, or even die.
Be sure to close the doors and windows tightly - the ferret is able to seep even into a narrow gap, and the mosquito net cannot stop it.
Ferrets are very active and mobile, so when keeping a ferret at home, think about where the animal can run freely. But at the same time, the ferret is quite capable of trying out things that you think are not too suitable for this — for example, shoes or furniture.
By the way, indoor plants in the same room with the ferret do not survive.
And it is better not to let the ferret enter the kitchen - there he can easily get hurt or jump onto a burning stove.
Ferrets are fairly clean, they can be accustomed to the tray, but keep in mind that they have a specific smell.
Ferret cage at home
Many owners, unable to provide the ferret with a safe environment, prefer to keep animals in cages. But the size of the cage must be sufficient so that the ferret can run: 1 square meter is a minimum.
The cage must be equipped with:
- Bowls for food and water
- By the tray.
The ferret's house should look like a hole so that the ferret can hide if he wishes. Great if you can equip a labyrinth there. But at the same time, the dimensions should be sufficient so that the ferret is easily deployed.
Even if the cage is spacious enough, if the ferret is kept at home, he should be able to make a daily “promenade” in the room - at least 2 hours a day.
Ferrets are very sociable animals that adore games and interaction with other living things. And if you do not have the opportunity to devote enough time to your pet, it is better to take a couple of animals. Lack of attention and movement can lead to ferret disease.
