Habitat and Life in Nature
Red macaws are divided into two subspecies. Ara macao macao inhabits Panama, northern and eastern Colombia, Guyana, Venezuela, southeastern Ecuador, northeastern Bolivia, part of Brazil, eastern Peru. Ara macao cyanoptera is distributed from Nicaragua to southeast Mexico.
Red macaws live in the crowns of tall rainforest trees. The food for them is nuts, fruits, young shoots of trees and shrubs. When crops ripen, parrots feed on plantations and fields, causing significant damage to the crop, so farmers are not enthusiastic about the neighborhood with these handsome men.
Character and temperament
Red Macaw is a species of parrot that is often kept in captivity. They are endowed with a good memory, sociable and easy to learn. This gives grounds for many owners to believe that their pets have almost human intelligence.
However, beginners are not recommended to start these birds. Nevertheless, the size and loud, harsh voice can sometimes make their neighborhood unbearable. And if the bird is frightened or excited, it emits a loud screech. Macao becomes especially noisy during the breeding season, but, in principle, they can scream every day - in the morning and in the afternoon.
Young red macaws are quickly tamed, but if you take an adult bird, it is likely that it will not get used to your society.
Macau distinguishes people well and does not like strangers, behaves with them capriciously and completely disobeys. But in relation to his beloved master, the handmade red macaw, despite a somewhat explosive temperament, is affectionate. There are birds that prefer men, and women are hostile (or vice versa).
The red macaw loves to communicate, and he needs to pay attention (at least 2 - 3 hours a day). If the bird is bored, it screams almost continuously.
Ara can occupy himself, your task is to offer intellectual games that parrots really love. It can also be distracted by offering objects that can be opened as toys. The main thing is that they are safe for the pet. In pet stores you can find toys for a large parrot.
1 - 2 times a day the red macaw should be able to fly.
These birds are not always cordial to other animals or small children, so do not leave the parrot alone with them.
Maintenance and care
Red macaws are large birds, so they need to create suitable conditions. It’s great if you can settle the bird in a separate room where it can fly safely, or build a spacious aviary. But if you keep a parrot in a cage, it should be all-metal and welded. The rods should be thick (minimum 2 mm), horizontal, located at a distance of 2 - 2.5 cm from each other. The cage should be equipped with a retractable bottom. The bottom is covered with any material that absorbs moisture well.
The minimum size of the cage: 90x90x170 cm. The minimum size of the aviary: 2x3x8 m, shelter: 2x2x2 m. Inside, place a wooden house in which your feathered friend will sleep (size: 70x60x100 cm).
To prevent the pet from getting out of captivity unauthorized, select a padlock to lock the cage. Ara are smart and easy to learn to open other deadbolts.
Clean the drinker and feeders daily. Toys are cleaned as needed. The cell is sanitized weekly. Aviary disinfected monthly.
The bottom of the cell is cleaned every day, the bottom of the aviary - twice a week.
Be sure to put thick branches of fruit trees in the cage: they contain useful minerals and vitamins.
It is wonderful if there is an opportunity to equip a pond: macaws love to swim. If this is not possible, periodically spray the pet from the spray bottle.
Cereal seeds make up 60 - 70% of the daily diet.
Love macaw peanuts and walnuts. Berries, vegetables and fruits (pears, apples, mountain ash, bananas, raspberries, blueberries, peaches, persimmons, cherries, cucumbers, carrots) are eaten with appetite. Sweet citrus fruits are chopped.Macaw will not refuse fresh Peking cabbage or crackers, porridge, boiled egg (hard-boiled) or dandelion leaves. However, all this is given in limited quantities.
Macaws are quite conservative and may be suspicious of changes in the diet, but diversity is necessary.
Adult red macaws are fed 2 times a day.
If you want to breed red macaws, then resettle them in a separate aviary, where they will live permanently. Aviary size: 1,6х1,9х3 m.
The floor is wooden, it is covered with sand, sod is laid upstairs.
Be sure to equip the aviary with a nesting house (50x70x50 cm) or a 120-liter barrel with a cut hole of 17x17 cm. Nest litter: sawdust and shavings.
The room should not be hot or cold (about 20 degrees), maintain humidity at 80%.
Adjust the light so that it is light for 15 hours in the room, and dark for 9 hours.
In the clutch of red macaw, as a rule, 2 - 3 eggs. Chicks hatch for about 4 weeks. And at the age of 3 months, feathered youth leaves the nest.
